Abstract:
The paper examines how the Internet and digital communication technologies have transformed romantic relationships, from the historical use of personal correspondence to contemporary online dating platforms. Drawing on examples from post-war China, recent research, and statistical data, it shows that digital platforms have increasingly replaced traditional ways of meeting partners, such as introductions through friends or encounters in bars and restaurants. This shift is evident among both heterosexual and same-sex couples and reflects the Internet’s expanding role in facilitating partner-seeking and emotional connection. The paper concludes that digital connectivity creates new opportunities for intimacy while also presenting challenges, requiring a balanced approach to technology’s role in contemporary relationships.
