Abstract:
This study examined how six Austrian middle-school teachers cope with teaching STEAM subjects outside their field of training and develop pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). Using interviews, field notes, and classroom observations, the study identified three key themes: access to quality teaching materials, support from colleagues, and limited formal professional development. The findings highlight a significant gap in targeted professional development for out-of-field teachers, which may affect their teaching confidence, professional identity, and students’ learning.
