Women, faith, and anti-apartheid activism in late twentieth-century Britain

Abstract:
Between 1989 and 1990, grassroots members of Britain’s Methodist women’s movement created and circulated an anti-apartheid ribbon to express solidarity with women resisting apartheid in South Africa. The article examines the ribbon as a local, national, and international object, showing how it enabled direct activism while also expressing and shaping the movement’s identity and role during a period of change. It highlights the importance and complexity of grassroots women’s activism.
