Pre-Service Teachers’ Beliefs About Students’ ‘Mathematical Digital Competency’

Abstract:
Survey of n=372 secondary pre-service teachers in Germany and England examining beliefs about students’ Mathematical Digital Competency (MDC) and its relation to beliefs about digital tools’ potentials/risks, self-efficacy, and epistemological beliefs. PSTs recognize benefits of digital mathematical tools but often reject treating MDC as an integrated amalgam, preferring emphasis on unaided mathematical thinking. Beliefs about students’ MDC were uncorrelated with PSTs’ self-efficacy and epistemological beliefs. Results highlight contradictions in PSTs’ belief systems and suggest teacher beliefs about students’ MDC are integral to teachers’ own MDC, with implications for teacher preparation.
