Abstract:
This research examines algorithmic colonialism in digital UI/UX for African users, showing how data‑driven systems reproduce colonial power by privileging Western values, aesthetics, and languages while marginalizing African norms. Through literature review and case studies (e.g., M‑Pesa, AfriDesign), it identifies three key features: algorithmic bias, cultural invisibility, and extractive data practices. It proposes a Decolonial Design Framework centered on African knowledge systems, participatory design, language support, and data sovereignty, offering both a clearer theoretical account of algorithmic colonialism as a design issue and practical guidance for policymakers, technologists, and designers seeking more just, culturally resonant digital systems.
