Abstract:
This book is dedicated to the educational legacy of Danilo Dolci, understood as a polyphonic, dialogical, and collaborative project rather than the work of one individual. It traces Dolci’s relationships with nonviolence thinkers, educators, children, families, and local communities in Western Sicily, showing how his “maieutic” (Socratic) approach grew from collective struggles for social justice.
The eight chapters examine: Dolci’s concepts of communication vs. transmission and power vs. domination; his roots in “meridionalismo” and early childhood services; his life and work as a maieutic educator; parallels with Paulo Freire and a shared radical, dialogical pedagogy; the central role of questioning in his practice; first-person memories of maieutic workshops by his son Amico Dolci; the reception of Dolci in Spanish-speaking contexts; and, finally, his changing reception in the English-speaking world. Together, the contributions highlight the contemporary relevance of Dolci’s work for social justice and emancipatory education.
