Abstract:
The study investigates how upper-secondary students and adult vocational teacher students in Norway and Sweden experience digital teaching, using Thévenot’s sociology of engagements and Lamont’s sociology of valuation. Combining surveys and interviews, it shows how social, material and emotional conditions shape participation, revealing tensions around reduced social interaction, tool adaptation, and clashes between personal learning preferences and institutional demands. While many report loss of motivation, connection and structure, others appreciate the flexibility and calm of digital formats. The authors argue for a context-sensitive understanding of digital engagement and pedagogical strategies that support diverse modes of participation across educational levels and professional settings.
