How can we make sustainable innovation enticing and exciting? The online marketplace case study breaks new ground in multimodal digital sustainability communication in the fashion domain – using game design tools. A platform for change-makers, developed by students, rewrites the narrative of the fashion industry, one pixel and one sustainable stitch at a time. It is a research-creation case study, which interweaves design research with sustainability communication. Digital tools, recently greatly accelerated by the Covid 19 pandemic, have expanded the educational space. It is an expertise we can build on to tackle the challenges of digital technologies – and to raise awareness for a more future. While digital fashion design and the design of digital spaces have also proliferated for commercial purposes, they have not to the author‘s knowledge been employed for educational projects to raise sustainability awareness. The project therefore interrogates the previously unexplored potential of fostering environmental fashion consciousness digitally. As screen-time increases, we need to leverage online platforms for sustainability initiatives – and educational structures should lead the way. The marketplace platform showcases creative fashion solutions, ranging from low-tech tech to the use of artificial intelligence, encouraging a dialogue between them.
