Job

KU Leuven is recruiting full-time junior or senior BOFZAP research professors from all scientific disciplines, with appointments beginning on 1 September 2027. The positions are intended for internationally recognised researchers, or for junior candidates who demonstrate strong potential, to develop an independent and internationally competitive research programme within a KU Leuven host unit. Responsibilities include publishing at the highest international level, building and supervising a research group, mentoring Master’s students, doctoral researchers and postdocs, securing competitive research funding, establishing national and international collaborations, and pursuing research valorisation where appropriate through engagement with policymakers, civil society and industry. Candidates must also possess the teaching skills required for university education. Although the initial appointment involves a limited teaching load, research professors are expected to contribute to high-quality, research-based teaching, with increased teaching and service responsibilities after ten years. Applications will be assessed independently by the KU Leuven Research Council and the relevant faculty advisory committee. The positions are funded by the Flemish Government through the Special Research Fund for the first ten years. After this period, the BOFZAP appointment will be converted into a regular academic staff position (ZAP).
