Abstract:
This chapter provides an account of a virtual exchange conducted between Dutch and American students. The program focused on environmental impacts in delta regions across the Atlantic. It employed GIS technology and role plays to deepen students’ grasp of environmental democracy and sustainability, enhancing intercultural communication and honing soft and digital competencies. The program highlighted the significance of real-time collaboration through environmental games and online mapping, enabling students to engage with and visualize environmental concerns. These activities showcased the intricacies of environmental democracy and the global spread of ecological risks. The use of GIS tools, in particular, worked to broaden students’ interdisciplinary outlook and digital prowess, contributing to the development of their academic and personal growth. The chapter concludes by exploring virtual exchanges’ pedagogical implications and potential, offering insights for educators and institutions keen on implementing similar initiatives. It underscores these programs’ effectiveness in fostering intercultural skills, promoting sustainability awareness, facilitating collaborative learning, and cultivating future environmental leaders well-versed in environmental democracy principles.
