Abstract:
On the intersection of globalization and digitalization, the wide application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has a profound impact on the information dissemination and the transnational flow of culture. This study first examines the influence mechanism of artificial intelligence on intercultural communication practices. This paper then analyzes the positive and negative impacts of artificial intelligence on intercultural communication. While AI has positive impacts on diversifying the actors, content, channels, objects and efficacy of intercultural communication to varying degrees, it also brings problems and challenges to intercultural communication practices, such as the Matthew effect across cultures, biased algorithms and information cocoons, to name a few. This study is wary of the possible “cultural cocoons” that may follow, and argues that measures should be taken to cope with the problems and challenges. Particularly, the technological advantages could serve as the instrument to help nurture and nourish the “cultural garden” where exchanges among different cultures and civilizations could carry forward in an equal manner, so that peoples around the world can learn from diverse cultures and share the benefits of development. These measures include creating a more equal platform for cultural exchanges, opposing cultural hegemony, improving the algorithms to avoid the “cultural cocoon”, advocating cultural tourism, and enhancing the policy and legal coordination.
