Abstract:
This chapter discusses the foundational roles of digital literacies and multiliteracies within the DIGICOMPASS framework. Positioned as the guiding “North” of the compass, digital literacy is vital for thriving in an interconnected, digitized world, encompassing technical proficiency, critical thinking, ethical engagement, and multimodal communication. Multiliteracies expand on this by integrating text, audio, visual, and interactive media to foster global citizenship through cultural sensitivity, critical thinking, and ethical practices. Intercultural and plurilingual multiliteracy is highlighted as essential for navigating multilingual and multicultural contexts, enhancing linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding. The chapter underscores the importance of embedding these literacies into curricula to prepare students for challenges including communication, ethical engagement, and cultural adaptability. However, it also raises concerns about conceptual overload and the need for clear definitions.
